Henderson 2nd at Sea to Stars

Henderson 2nd at Sea to Stars

Congratulations to Cycle Station’s Racing Team Athlete, Penn Henderson, on his 2nd place overall finish this weekend up Mauna Kea’s grueling Sea to Stars cycling race!

Considered one of the most challenging climbs in the world, the 49-mile event began at Sea Level from the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and finished at the Mauna Kea Ranger Station near 10,000-ft. The State’s top cyclists set a fierce pace from the beginning heading up towards Waikoloa Village, quickly creating several gaps within the field. Shortly thereafter, Henderson and Eric Lau (last year’s champion) took it to another level by initiating an early breakaway which they built upon for the remaining 42-miles towards the finish. As grades up Mauna Kea neared 20-percent over the last few miles, Henderson and Lau gave it everything– with the 22-year old Lau eventually pulling away at the finish for his second championship. Henderson finished 3-minutes behind in 3-hrs, 29-min for what he described as one of the most rewarding race experiences that he’s had.

“After suffering through last year’s event, I wanted to make sure I didn’t make the same mistakes this time around. It’s an awesome feeling to finish strong knowing your training and race plan actually worked! A big thanks to Cycle Station for dialing in my equipment and nutrition plan!” ~Penn Henderson
